‘I don’t think it’s close’: Robbie Fowler says he played with someone at Liverpool who was better than Gerrard

Robbie Fowler played with some absolutely amazing players during his time at Liverpool.

Fowler played with a Ballon d’Or winer at Anfield, in the shape of Michael Owen, Fowler recently praised Owen as a player actually.

Meanwhile, during his second stint at Liverpool, Fowler played with World Cup winners such as Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso.

Speaking on the Say it and Spray it Podcast, Fowler has named his greatest ever teammate.

Indeed, the striker says that Steve McManaman is the best player he’s ever played with.

Robbie Fowler names his best ever teammate

Fowler said that Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush and Steven Gerrard are the three best players in Liverpool’s history.

However, he says that in terms of who he played with personally, Steve McManaman was his best teammate, claiming that he doesn’t get the adulation he deserves from some Liverpool fans.

Gary Neville recently praised McManaman, claiming that he would’ve been brilliant for Manchester United if he’d joined the Red Devils.

“So who would you say the best player you’ve ever played with is?” Fowler was asked.

“I mean, for me, this is not hard actually, because I think when you think of Liverpool, you think of obviously Sir Kenny, you think of Rushy, you think of Stevie Gsand all these great players. If you were to sort of pinpoint any player who’s been best in Liverpool, Kenny gets a mention, so Kenny, Steven. So it’s maybe close between them two who’s probably the best,” Fowler said.

“I mean, I’ve got a lot of time with Kenny, although I never played with him. I realised how great he was as a player. Steven I played with for a number of years when he was obviously coming through as a young kid.

“Obviously, when I came back, he was, I mean, he was an absolute superstar when I came back to Liverpool. But my best player, I don’t think it’s close with Steve McManaman. Steve McManaman was incredible.

“He really was. And I don’t know, he probably doesn’t get the love I think he deserves from some of the fans.”

Robbie Fowler record with Steve McManaman

Fowler says that McManaman is the best player he’s ever played with, and it’s not hard to understand why.

Indeed, while Owen, Gerrard, Torres or Alonso may have hit higher highs, McManaman and Fowler were incredible together.

Two members of Liverpool’s iconic Spice Boys, McManaman and Fowler were a joy to watch in the 1990s.

McManaman and Fowler combined for 30 goals during their careers, the most prolific partnership of either player’s career.

30 joint goal participations may not sound a lot, but, to give that some context, Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres only had a tally of 23 joint goal participations during their time together at Liverpool.

Fowler says that McManaman doesn’t get the love he deserves, and he’s right, not just in terms of Liverpool supporters either.

McManaman is a two-time Champions League winner who has scored in a Champions League final, and yet, he’s not considered among the greatest of his generation.

McManaman is a true legend of the game, there’s no doubt about that.
